Famous for its daring modern paint schemes, the Chessie System burst onto the railroad scene in 1972. B&O, C&O, and Western Maryland railroads made up the bulk of Chessie, and later the railroad merged with Seaboard Coast Line to form the CSX Corporation. New for Lionel in 2010, the Chessie Merger Special celebrates important railroads that were part of the Chessie System in the 1970s and 1980s.
A rugged GP-38 dressed in classic Chessie yellow, vermillion, and blue hauls a new line of merger freight cars equipped with die-cast sprung trucks. Rolling stock includes a boxcar featuring the famous Seaboardred heart logo, a C&O gondola with a brand new scrap load, and a B&O flatcar with a modern trailer load. A classic red
caboose decorated in Western Maryland livery completes this special set.
